Hospitalists

Our hospitalist doctors are board certified and family medicine and/or internal medicine trained with a minimum of two years of experience. Their scope of practice is managing hospitalized patients admitted for general medicine services and in intensive care units (ICU) in facilities without a pulmonary/critical care physician.

Specialists

We also have doctors who are specialists in cardiology, nephrology, infectious disease, neurology, and psychiatry. This allows us to deliver the specific medical care your patients need through talented and experienced physicians.

We work on a shift-based scheduling model, split into day and night coverage. Day shift begins at 7 am and continues until 7 pm. Night shift begins at 7 pm and continues until 7 am.

Patients are accepted into our service in a few different ways. The primary route is through the ER. After the ER stabilizes a patient and it is determined that they are too sick to return home or need further evaluation and treatment, they call SynchronyMD to admit the patient to a general medical floor or ICU, depending on the severity of their illness.

The number of physicians available on any given day depends on the overall number of patients in our care, which is referred to as our census. As a general rule, each physician can carry 18-20 patients assigned at 7 am, plus 2 to 3 new admissions who require medical consultation transferred either directly from ER or from outside the facility upon request of a surgeon.

The 18-20 patients at the start of a day shift could consist of new admissions leftover from the night shift, daily rounding with progress notes on patients already admitted, or those who are stable for discharge to home or a sub-acute care facility.

On night shifts, our responsibility is to cross-cover all patients under our care with a physician referred to as a nocturnist. In addition, the nocturnist accepts all new admissions from the prior-mentioned routes, performs a full evaluation, and places admission orders. The average new admissions for rural hospitals is 5 to 6 patients, while the average at a busy, medium-size hospital is 12 patients.
